Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Rivers state has urged the public to conduct themselves in a peaceful and civilized manner come February 16th election.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga, who stated this in Port Harcourt, said every one member of the society has a role to play in ensuring that elections are conducted successfully in the state.

According to him, electoral success is not only tied to political candidates’ victory, but adherence to the laid down rules and regulations guiding the electoral process.

‘’Where in the world do you have elections and everything is shut down? So many security personnel are posted out on the streets and people are expecting one security officer policing every single person.

“We should begin to ask ourselves as Nigerians what we want to make out of our society when it comes to elections and what we want elections to be like.

“We say come out and vote and when your vote is counted you go, but some persons would want to vote more than once if given the chance. Some people would want to manipulate the person conducting the elections.

“Let’s advice ourselves as Nigerians if this is how we want our society to be. INEC is at the center conducting the election, but it is the responsibility of everyone to make it a success”

Effanga further stressed that the commission will give priority to some persons with special needs to vote, in every polling units across the twenty-three local government areas.

“INEC is not oblivious of the needs of special members of our communities. We will provide special support and assistance for such persons to participate.

“In every polling unit, the following persons are entitled to be served with priority: the elderly, persons with disability, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

“It is within the rights of the affected voters to draw the attention of our personnel to make a request for such” he said.
