Wike visits Ortom, commiserates with the state over herdsmen attack.

Rivers state Governor has on Wednesday, February 7th , visited his Benue counterpart, Samuel Ortom, in Markudi to commiserate with him and the people of the state on the recent spate of attacks launched by the Fulani herdsmen across the state.

The delegates from Rivers State were received by the Benue State Governor at the Markudi Airport.

On the visit with Governor Wike is Chief OCJ SAN, Chief Ferdinard Anabraba, Senator George Sekibo, Senator Olaka Nworgu, Hon Tammy Danagogo amongst other leaders.

Herdsmen had attacked and killed more than 75 persons on New Year day in the state. The attack, which took place in two villages in Gumi local government drew nationwide condemnation.

The Benue state leader of the cattle breeders association, Miyetti Allah, Garus Gololo, confirmed during a BBC interview that their members carried out the attack.

Mr Gololo stated that they carried out the attack because the locals stole some of their cows.

His response drew sharp local and international criticism and sparked pockets of protests around the state in January.

Benue State Governor and the police traded blames due to the ethnic dimension that has characterized federal government’s response to the killings , with the police pro, Jimoh Ibrahim, saying that the Governor is a drowning man.

The opposition Party, the People Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier in January, paid condolence visit to the state where it donated relief materials to the displaced.

Other socio-cultural organizations like Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and Afenifere had also visited the state to commiserate with the people.

Governor Wike and his delegates were conducted round the site where the victims had been buried where they prayed for their repose.
