Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, reached the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after defeating Brazil 3-1 in their semi-final in Morocco.
At the heart of the historic victory was Awawu Bashiru, who scored twice on her first start of the tournament and was named Player of the Match.
Bashiru had previously played 73 minutes without starting a game during Nigeria’s first six matches. However, head coach Akeem Busari handed her a starting opportunity against Brazil, and the forward made it count.
The match was goalless at half-time, but Nigeria took control after the break. Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute before Bashiru doubled the advantage in the 71st minute.
The forward completed her brace in the 80th minute, giving the Flamingos a commanding 3-0 lead.
Brazil pulled one back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure a 3-1 victory and book their place in the final.
Bashiru’s performance turned her first start into a memorable occasion, with her two goals proving decisive in Nigeria’s historic semi-final triumph.
Speaking after the match, the young forward expressed her delight at making her first start and helping the team reach the final.
The victory marks the first time the Flamingos have reached the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria will now face Japan on Saturday, November 7, in their bid to claim the title.
Japan booked their place in the final after defeating North Korea on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The Flamingos will aim to build on their performance against Brazil and complete their campaign with a first world title.
