Nigeria’s Flamingos are intensifying preparations for their crucial Group B encounter against defending champions North Korea at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with a place in the knockout stage at stake.
Head coach Akeem Busari confirmed that the team had begun preparations following Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
The players completed their recovery routine and held a team meeting to review their performance against Puerto Rico, while the coaching crew worked on the tactical approach for Friday’s encounter.
The team was scheduled to hold its final training session on Thursday to fine-tune its strategy against a North Korean side that has dominated the group stage.
North Korea have won both of their opening matches, beating Puerto Rico 6-0 before thrashing Poland 6-1. The defending champions have scored 12 goals and conceded just once, establishing themselves as the team to beat in Group B.
Nigeria, meanwhile, recovered from a 2-1 opening defeat to Poland by overcoming Puerto Rico, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring before substitute Precious Oscar sealed the victory late in the game.
The result leaves the Flamingos with three points ahead of their final group fixture. Poland also have three points, while Puerto Rico remain without a point. North Korea lead the group with six points.
Friday’s match presents a demanding test for Busari’s side, particularly against opponents whose attacking threat has been evident throughout the tournament. Nigeria will need to maintain defensive discipline, limit spaces for their opponents and take advantage of scoring opportunities.
Despite North Korea’s impressive form, the Flamingos will draw confidence from their victory over Puerto Rico as they seek to secure progression to the Round of 16.
A win or draw against North Korea would guarantee Nigeria a place in the knockout stage. A defeat, however, would leave their qualification hopes dependent on the result of the other Group B fixture and the applicable tournament tiebreakers.
North Korea have established a strong record in the competition, winning four titles in 2008, 2016, 2024 and 2025. The Asian side are seeking to extend their success as they defend their crown in Morocco.
The two teams have met twice previously at the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria won their first encounter 3-2 in 2010, while North Korea claimed a 3-0 victory in 2016.
With qualification on the line, Busari’s tactical decisions and the players’ ability to execute the game plan will be crucial. The Flamingos will be hoping to build on their response against Puerto Rico and deliver a disciplined performance capable of challenging the defending champions.
The match is scheduled for Friday, October 23, with kick-off at 4 p.m. Nigerian time.
