The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned that SIM-enabled devices that fail to meet its type approval and verification requirements may be blocked from accessing mobile telecommunications networks in Nigeria.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Commission said manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers and retailers must obtain the required approvals and submit devices’ International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) details for verification before sale or distribution.
The NCC said it was strengthening enforcement through technology-enabled verification to ensure devices entering the Nigerian market comply with the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 and relevant regulations.
It cited Section 132 of the Act and Regulation 4 of the Type Approval Regulations 2024 as the legal basis for the requirements.

The Commission also urged businesses to review existing stock and work with suppliers to resolve any outstanding compliance issues. New imports must meet the applicable requirements before being placed on the market.
According to the NCC, the automated compliance process will help identify irregularities in device importation and distribution while supporting the reconciliation of import records in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Commission said the initiative would promote fair competition by ensuring compliant businesses were not disadvantaged by those failing to meet their obligations.
It encouraged stakeholders who were uncertain about the compliance process to seek guidance through its approved onboarding and support channels.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers, enforcing standards and promoting a fair and sustainable market for communications devices in Nigeria.
