All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement a Supreme Court order that political parties should provide their membership registers before the conduct of primaries, congresses and conventions.
The party made the request in a letter dated 9 October 2026 addressed to the INEC chairman. The party’s national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and national secretary, Ajibola Basiru, signed the letter.
The party’s request was triggered by the Supreme Court’s order of 24 September 2026 in INEC v. Zenith Labour Party that affirmed the constitutionality of Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026.
Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026 requires registered political parties to provide INEC with the electronic and physical copies of their membership registers not less than 21 days before conducting primaries, congresses or conventions.
It further limits membership of any such party activity to only members whose names appear in the submitted registers. It is only the registered members that can vote or contest in the internal election process of the political parties.
In a press statement issued on Friday from Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Felix Morka stated that INEC should ascertain whether political parties have been able to comply with the law.
Morka also stated that the commission should enforce the penalties provided for the defaulting political parties by law.
According to APC, adherence to electoral laws and internal party processes will be very essential as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections.
APC called on INEC to urgently enforce the Supreme Court judgment for the sake of ensuring transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
