Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has announced his intention to create a political mobilisation structure in Abuja and Rivers State that will help President Bola Tinubu win his second term.
Wike made the revelation while inspecting the construction of dual roads in the Kuje-Gwagwalada, saying that various political organisations are currently creating their structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The minister, who is from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is working in the current APC federal government, says politicians across all parties are currently working together to create structures for the elections.
This is to say that the mobilisation campaign is going to be spearheaded by a coalition of various supporters led by him. Notably, this development has drawn condemnation from some governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On its part, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, which is headed by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, has criticised the arrangement on the grounds that it could undermine the party structure and the interests of candidates of the party.
Governors have complained that the platform is being used by politicians who had defected from the APC in order to contest as candidates of other political parties.
Mr Wike dismissed the criticism, terming it politically motivated. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of some of the state governors, pointing out those in Kwara, Ogun and Imo States.
In his comments regarding the 2027 elections, Mr Wike indicated that the development of infrastructure by the federal government in the FCT will be critical in winning popularity.
He contended that the people will judge the government not by what it says but by what it does, noting that people can measure it in terms of the roads being built and other infrastructure.
He was very confident that these projects will help in winning elections for the candidates vying for legislative positions in the territory. While carrying out an inspection of the Kuje-Gwagwalada road project, Mr Wike congratulated the contractors and technical staff involved in the construction of the road.
He mentioned that the road passes through a highly populated place and assured the citizens that the project will get all the funding needed to ensure its completion within the year. According to him, the consistent funding of the major capital projects in the FCT is due to the support of Tinubu’s government.
