Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has approved a 50 percent increase in overhead funding for the state Judiciary and its institutions to improve operations and welfare.
The Governor announced this on Thursday at a special court session marking the opening of the 2026/2027 Legal Year at the High Court Complex in Port Harcourt.
Represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to judicial independence and pledged continued support for the Judiciary to effectively perform its constitutional responsibilities.
He said the Judiciary remains vital to maintaining peace, stability and socio-economic development through the resolution of disputes and administration of justice.
The Governor acknowledged challenges facing the institution, including inadequate infrastructure and manpower, heavy caseloads and delays in the justice system.

Fubara said his administration had supported the Judiciary through the appointment of additional judges and magistrates, digitalisation of case management and other institutional reforms.
He explained that the increased overhead allocation would help meet operational needs, improve judicial welfare and support training for judicial officers and staff.
The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, commended the Governor for supporting the Judiciary and urged judicial officers to remain committed to fairness, integrity and their judicial oath.
Justice Amadi said improved manpower and better working conditions would strengthen the justice system and enable it to better serve the people.
Earlier, a thanksgiving and rededication service was held at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Rebisi, to commence the new legal year.
