The Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) and Secretary of the Forum of CEOs of State Social Health Insurance Agencies (SSHIA) in Nigeria, Dr. Vetty Agala, has joined other health experts in advocating greater data visibility to build public trust and strengthen the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).
The experts made the call at the 2026 BusinessDay Health Conference held in Abuja, with the theme, “Building Trust, Building Systems: Strengthening the BHCPF for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).”
The conference brought together policymakers, healthcare leaders, development partners and industry experts to deliberate on strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s health system, promoting sustainable healthcare financing and restoring public confidence in healthcare delivery.
Speaking during a strategic panel session, Agala stressed the need for greater transparency and online visibility of data relating to the implementation of the BHCPF.

She said relevant information, particularly data showing the number of people enrolled and those accessing and utilising healthcare services through the fund, should be made publicly accessible online.
According to her, making such data readily available would promote transparency, strengthen accountability and enable stakeholders and members of the public to better understand how healthcare interventions and resources are being utilised.
Agala also emphasised the need for accountability at every level of the healthcare delivery system, from healthcare workers at the facility level to managers and other stakeholders responsible for providing and overseeing healthcare services.
She maintained that collective responsibility, transparency, and accountability were essential to building a healthcare system capable of earning public trust and advancing the goal of Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria.
