The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned the management of PAMO University to explain funds received from the state government for scholarships awarded to Rivers indigenes studying medicine at the institution.
The university management is expected to appear before an ad-hoc committee of the House on September 16 and account for the funds received from 2017 to date.
Also summoned are the Commissioner for Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Accountant General of the State, among others.
Chairman of the committee, Honourable Dumle Maol, said the invitation was based on Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution, which empower the legislature to investigate the management and use of public funds.
Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Martin Amaewhule, said the Assembly has the constitutional authority to invite individuals and organisations that receive money from the state government to explain how such funds are being utilised.

He warned that the House would not tolerate failure to honour its invitation.
The development follows the Assembly’s earlier refusal to approve six billion naira inserted into the 2027 appropriation bill by the executive, pending clarification on its intended use.
Meanwhile, the House Committee on Public Petitions, chaired by Honourable Enemi George, submitted its report on a petition by former students of the Sea School, Isaka, seeking a change of the school’s name from Government School Isaka.
Following debate on the petition, Speaker Amaewhule urged the lawmakers to initiate a proper bill to address the request.
The House adjourned till Monday, September 21.
