Coventry City’s difficult return to the Premier League continued emphatically as they suffered a heavy 5-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving them bottom of the table after four matches without scoring a single goal.
Frank Lampard’s side became only the second team in Premier League history to lose their opening four matches of a season without finding the net, underlining the size of the challenge facing Coventry in their first top-flight campaign in 25 years.
Brighton dominated the early stages and could have taken the lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Diego Gómez fired wide after Jay Dasilva’s attempted clearance fell into his path, before Charalampos Kostoulas sent an effort into the side netting.
Malick Yalcouyé also went close moments later, but his effort was comfortably dealt with by former Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
Coventry gradually grew into the contest and created several promising opportunities of their own. Jack Rudoni headed narrowly over from Ephron Mason-Clark’s delivery before forcing Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into an excellent one-handed save with a header at the back post.
The hosts continued to threaten, with Verbruggen again coming to Brighton’s rescue when he tipped Frank Onyeka’s powerful volley over the crossbar.

However, Coventry’s failure to convert their chances proved costly. Brighton finally broke the deadlock when Kostoulas created space inside the penalty area before calmly placing his shot into the bottom-left corner.
Brighton doubled their advantage shortly after half-time. Yalcouyé reacted quickest to a loose ball ahead of Aurèle Amenda, raced through on goal and finished confidently at the near post.
Coventry’s afternoon then deteriorated further when Taiwo Awoniyi was shown a straight red card after elbowing Maxim De Cuyper off the ball.
Playing against 10 men, Coventry were unable to contain Brighton, who extended their lead from the penalty spot. Pascal Groß made no mistake after Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas inside the area.
Despite being comfortably beaten, Coventry continued searching for a consolation goal. Brandon Thomas-Asante came close with a half-volley, but Verbruggen produced another save to deny him and preserve Brighton’s clean sheet.
Brighton added a spectacular fourth when Lewis Dunk unleashed a stunning 30-yard strike that flew beyond Rushworth.
Yasin Ayari completed the rout in stoppage time, scoring Brighton’s fifth goal to cap an impressive away performance and end the Seagulls’ three-match winless run on the road in the Premier League.
For Coventry, the defeat leaves them at the foot of the Premier League table after four games, with their attacking struggles particularly concerning. Lampard’s team will have another opportunity to end their goal drought when they travel to Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
The result also provides Brighton with a major boost as they look to build momentum early in the Premier League season.
