The Rivers State Waste Management Agency, RIWAMA, in partnership with Health Environment and You, has launched a statewide mass literacy campaign to promote the recycling of used water sachets.
The campaign is part of the 100 Million Used Water Sachet Recycling Challenge under the Clean Rivers Initiative.
The organisers said an estimated one million water sachets are consumed daily in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, with many discarded on streets, in markets, schools, drainage channels and waterways.
Speaking at the unveiling of four thousand recycled sachets converted into throw pillows, the Managing Director of RIWAMA, Dr Ibimina Wokoma, said the initiative seeks to encourage responsible waste disposal and increase community involvement in keeping the state clean.

Dr Wokoma explained that used sachets form a significant part of the waste obstructing drainage systems in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and other parts of the state.
He said the recycling challenge would involve schools, markets, churches and community groups in the collection and proper recycling of discarded sachets.
The RIWAMA boss stressed that the campaign is aimed at changing public attitudes towards waste by showing residents that discarded materials can be converted into useful products.
He urged residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the campaign and contribute to cleaner communities, improved public health and reduced flooding across Rivers State.
