The Executive Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Hon. Alwel Ihunda, DSSRS, JP, has commissioned the newly reconstructed and furnished Township Primary School on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The commissioning formed part of activities marking Ihunda’s first anniversary in office and followed the administration’s efforts to reconstruct and furnish the school, which had suffered years of vandalism.
The occasion was attended by Chief Israel Tom Aseminaso, JP, Amabipi of Obumuton-Chiri Kingdom, who led a delegation of representatives from various communities in Ward 6 of Obumuton-Chiri, formerly known as Old Port Harcourt Township.
The delegation was supported by Chief Comr. Vincent Anga Ngofaka, while community members dressed in traditional Wakirike attire welcomed the mayor and his entourage with traditional hospitality, including the presentation of kola.
The event also featured cultural performances, including historic dance steps by Tonipirima Ama Iriapu alongside women from the community.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Aseminaso thanked the mayor for remembering the people of Ward 6 through the reconstruction and furnishing of the school.
He noted that the school had suffered serious vandalism over the years and expressed appreciation for the intervention by the Port Harcourt City Local Government administration.
Chief Aseminaso and Chief Anga later joined the Special Guest of Honour, Hon. Sam Oge, Esq., DSSRS, Executive Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB), Hon. Alwel Ihunda, Hon. Ken Chikere, DSSRS, Leader of the Rainbow Coalition in Port Harcourt City LGA, Hon. Ugo Aguma, Hon. Mina Mildred Tom-Quinn, Deputy Mayor of Port Harcourt City LGA, and other dignitaries for the official commissioning of the project.
The newly reconstructed and furnished school is expected to contribute to improved access to quality basic education at the grassroots and support the development of future leaders in the community.
The commissioning was celebrated by residents and stakeholders as a significant intervention in the education sector and a demonstration of the local government’s commitment to improving learning facilities.
