Sixty-Five Years of The Same Broken System: Vote Wisely

Ask yourself this: if your candidate wins the next election, will Nigeria actually change? Not for eight months. Not with new billboards and slogans. Will the way we budget change? Will power reach ordinary people? Will a child born in Port Harcourt have the same real shot as one born in Ikoyi?

Since independence we’ve repeated one pattern. Civilian or military, APC or PDP, the result is the same: money piles up at the centre, patronage goes to whoever controls it, institutions bend for those in power, and citizens beg government instead of owning it. We’ve changed the name on the door too many times. The room behind it never changes.

Here’s the question we avoid every election: what if the problem isn’t who becomes president? What if it’s the structure they inherit? A federal system that hoards power in Abuja. A civil service built to control, not serve. Politics that rewards loyalty over competence. Voters conditioned by scarcity to choose whoever shares cash fastest. A good, honest person dropped into that machine won’t rebuild it in four years. Either they shift it a little, or it breaks them. History says it usually breaks them.

None of this is an argument for apathy. Do not mistake this for “nothing matters, so why vote.” Individual leaders matter enormously at the margins; the difference between a government that pays attention to security and one that ignores it, between a government that at least tries competent economic management and one that does not, can genuinely be measured in lives. But there is a difference between a leader who makes things marginally better within a broken structure and a leader who fixes the structure itself. Nigeria has occasionally gotten the first. It has never gotten the second, because no single term, or even two terms, was designed with the mandate or the time to attempt it.

So what would real change take? Structural change, not just new faces. Genuine fiscal federalism, so states and LGAs stop waiting on Abuja every month to survive. Electoral and judicial systems, independent enough that accountability doesn’t depend on who’s in power. A civil service judged on service delivery, not patronage. These are constitutional, institutional, and generational. No aspirant on any ballot, however sincere, can deliver these alone in one term, because the very system he would be elected to head was built to resist exactly this kind of change.

This isn’t a case against voting well. Choose carefully. Campaign hard. Hold whoever wins to account. But be realistic about what one election can do. The next president won’t “fix Nigeria” in 4 or 8 years. At best, they start dismantling our broken structure, brick by brick, and stay at it long enough to outlast their tenure. That commitment to reform, not personality, is what you should demand from every candidate.

Vote like the Government matters. Just stop expecting it to do the work that only structural reform, sustained across decades, can actually finish.
