UEFA has confirmed sending a document preservation letter to FIFA, signalling possible legal action over a failed proposal by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to sell a stake in future World Cup commercial rights to private investors.
The legal notice requires FIFA to preserve documents, electronic records and communications that could serve as evidence in any future court proceedings. Reports say it names 18 FIFA officials, including Infantino, Chief Financial Officer Thomas Peyer and Arsène Wenger.

The move follows the collapse of a proposed $4.2 billion investment plan that sought to sell a stake in future World Cup revenues. The proposal was withdrawn after widespread opposition led by UEFA and other football stakeholders over governance concerns.
UEFA said legal proceedings are now being considered and is also reportedly exploring support for an alternative candidate ahead of FIFA’s presidential election in March 2027 in Morocco.
The controversy has further increased pressure on Infantino, although he continues to enjoy backing from some football confederations despite growing opposition from Europe and other regions.
