Hope, Not Just Love, Keeps Relationships Alive

Many people believe that love is the strongest foundation of a relationship. I disagree. Hope is. Consider faith. People do not attend church simply because they enjoy the services.

They go because they have hope. The Bible does not just tell people to hope; it gives direction to that hope. It explains where they are going, what they are living for, and why they should keep believing even when they cannot yet see the outcome.

Relationships work in the same way. A relationship without hope is like a journey without a destination. Sooner or later, people get tired of walking. Even schools understand this principle. When new students are admitted, they are not thrown straight into classrooms.

They are first introduced to the school. They learn the rules, the vision, the expectations, and what they are there to achieve. That orientation gives them direction.

Relationships also need that kind of orientation. A man should be able to sit down with the woman he is dating and say: “This is the future I am working towards. This is the kind of home I want to build. These are my values, my goals, and the direction I am heading.” She then has a choice.

If that vision aligns with hers, they can build together. If it does not, it is better for both of them to be honest before investing years into something that is going nowhere. The same applies to women.

If all a woman wants from a relationship is money, without any concern for the future the two of them are trying to build, then something is missing.

And if a man has no vision, no direction, no plan for the future, and every conversation remains focused on today’s pleasures without any thought for tomorrow, then the woman should ask herself where the relationship is actually going. A healthy relationship should not be only about surviving today.

It should include conversations about tomorrow. What are we building? What kind of family do we want?
What values will guide us? What sacrifices are we willing to make? Without those conversations, two people can spend years together and still be strangers when it comes to purpose. Love may bring two people together.
But hope and a shared vision are what give them a reason to keep building.
