The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially started the rehabilitation of the 225-megawatt Gbarain National Integrated Power Project, handing over the facility to Schneider Electric/TILT Energy for urgent repair works.
The development forms part of NDPHC’s broader initiative to revive stranded power assets and increase generation capacity on the national grid.
Engr. Jennifer Adighije, the company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, led the handover ceremony and issued the Notice to Proceed.
The plant has remained shut since a fire destroyed its Power Control Module in November 2020, preventing its commissioning.
With all approvals secured, contractors now aim to complete restoration within 12 months.
Adighije commended her team for overcoming years of delays and called for strict adherence to the project schedule. She emphasised zero tolerance for slippages, noting that the restored facility would boost grid stability and electricity supply across Nigeria.
Executive Director of Generation, Engr. Abdullahi Kassim, described the 2020 incident as a serious setback but praised Adighije’s leadership in reviving the project.
General Manager for Generation Projects, Engr. Ginsau Idris, confirmed the module requires full replacement due to extensive fire damage.
TILT Energy Managing Director Mr. Deji Awodeji assured stakeholders of quality delivery within the agreed timeline. The gas-fired plant benefits from its location near abundant gas supplies, with supporting infrastructure currently under construction.
Successful completion is expected to add significant capacity to the national grid, supporting industrial growth and economic development under the National Integrated Power Project framework.
