The Rivers State Government on Friday July 10, 2026 commenced the construction and installation of an 11.9 megawatt peak (MWp) solar mini-grid project in Bolo Town, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was represented by the Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu at the flag-off ceremony, described the project as a significant step towards delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to the community.
Professor Odu emphasised that the initiative goes beyond mere infrastructure development. “This milestone is about ushering in a brighter, cleaner, and more reliable future for a community that richly deserves it,” she said.
According to her, the project to be executed under the REA-DARES MST-Interconnected Mini-Grids initiative, is expected to boost economic activities in the area by providing consistent power supply to local businesses, creating employment opportunities for youths, enhancing the operations of healthcare facilities and schools and reducing reliance on fossil fuels thereby contributing to environmental sustainability in the region.
She commended the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and other development partners for their collaboration, noting that such partnerships remain critical to delivering impactful, people-centred projects across Rivers State.
The Deputy Governor urged residents of Bolo Town and the entire Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area to take full ownership of the project, protect the facilities, and cooperate with contractors to ensure timely completion and long-term sustainability.
“Our administration remains committed to the promise that no community will be left behind in our journey towards sustainable development, inclusive growth, and shared prosperity.”
She added that the solar mini-grid project forms part of broader efforts by the Rivers State Government to expand access to clean energy and accelerate development in rural and semi-urban communities.
