Nigeria’s reps discover continental path as CAF competitions start September Nigeria’s clubs participating in next season’s CAF interclub competitions have learned their respective paths as their campaigns kick-off in September.
Nigerian Premier Football League kings, Rangers, and runners-up, Rivers United, will represent the country in the CAF Champions League. While the Shooting Stars and the winner of this year’s President Federation Cup will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The slot for the other representative of Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup is yet to be decided, as the final between Nasarawa United and Ikorodu City in the President Federation Cup final, to be held at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on July 11, will decide who joins Shooting Stars.
For Rivers United and Rangers, it will be a race to reach the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition after their recent uninspired performances in continental tournaments. “CAF preliminary first round will hold from September 4 to 6 with the reverse fixture from September 11 to 13.
The second preliminary round is slated to be played on October 16-18 with the second leg a week later October 23 to 25.” A statement from CAF had revealed earlier. Those who come out on top from these preliminary ties will progress to the group stage which is expected to start at the end of November.
As plans have begun for next season’s competitions, the clubs are looking to boost Nigeria’s image on the continent. Rangers, Rivers United, Shooting Stars and whichever club emerges the winner of the President Federation Cup, will look to challenge for continental glory.
