NFF Opens Golden Eaglets Camp for Qualifiers Preparation

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially opened the training camp for the Under-17 national football team, the Golden Eaglets, in Abuja on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The opening of the camp marks the formal commencement of preparations for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign, as Nigeria seeks to secure a return to the continental tournament after missing out on the competition during the last qualification cycle.

The commencement of the screening exercise has drawn significant attention from football administrators, grassroots scouts, and academy proprietors across Rivers State. The state has historically served as a key developmental base for national youth players, and local stakeholders are closely monitoring the Abuja camp to assess the representation of talent selected from the South-South regional leagues.

According to statements from team officials, the initial phase of the camp will focus on physical screening, tactical evaluations, and mandatory age-verification procedures. The coaching staff faces a strict timeline to assess the invited players and build a competitive team ahead of the regional West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B qualifiers, which serve as the sole pathway to the continental showpiece.

The current screening exercise represents a major structural shift for the NFF’s youth development pipeline. Following the team’s inability to progress past the regional qualifiers in the previous cycle, the federation has faced calls from sports analysts to expand its scouting network beyond the major administrative centers of Lagos and Abuja.

Local academy directors in Port Harcourt noted that the success of the current cycle depends heavily on the transparency of the selection process. Officials from various grassroots teams in Rivers State stated that they are tracking the daily arrivals at the Abuja camp to ensure that players discovered during local youth leagues and state tournaments are given a full opportunity to compete for spots on the final roster.  The intensive training sessions are expected to continue at the FIFA Goal Project pitch in Abuja over the next few weeks.

The technical department is projected to trim the squad down once the initial physical assessments and age-verification results are completed, before entering the final phase of tactical preparations for the upcoming competitive international matches.
