The Federal Government says the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System will serve as a critical national infrastructure to improve security coordination, emergency response, logistics, and public service delivery across Nigeria.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Tuesday during a stakeholder workshop involving the Postmaster General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi, representatives of security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
He said the system will assign every location in Nigeria a unique, machine-readable and geographically anchored digital address that can be used for identification, verification, and service delivery.
According to him, the postcode system will improve how individuals, homes, businesses, and public facilities are located and accessed, particularly in emergency situations where response time is critical.
Tijani said it will also strengthen national security operations by improving location tracking and coordination among security and emergency response agencies.
He added that the system is expected to enhance logistics operations and e-commerce services by providing more accurate address data and reducing delivery inefficiencies.
The minister noted that the initiative forms part of a broader national digital infrastructure agenda, which includes Project BRIDGE, a 90,000km fibre optic rollout programme, the National Unified Communications Access Project (NUCAP), the Nigeria Data Exchange, and ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.
He said these initiatives are designed to work together to build a more connected and data-driven economy that supports both government operations and private sector growth.
Tijani explained that the postcode system will ensure that every person, business, and location is properly mapped within a unified digital framework that supports planning, governance, and service delivery.
He added that the Federal Government will continue engagement with stakeholders ahead of the planned nationwide launch of the postcode system in October.
