The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has introduced new internal reforms that are designed to build the party up into an institution, while limiting the role played by personality in politics.
According to a communique issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the following resolutions were arrived at during the second meeting of the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The party directives demand that all elected individuals who represent the NDC be obliged to consult with the party before making any policy decision or appointing anyone other than themselves.
The party made it clear that it would neither act as a “Special Purpose Vehicle” (SPV) nor as a “personality cult.”
The party its supremacy mandated members to subsume their individual interests and agendas to the collective interest of the party.
As part of unity, the NEC made it compulsory for all NGOs and supporting organizations to work under the direction of the party.
The party further made it clear that any group or organization that operates independently and parallel with the party organisation will no longer be tolerated by the party.
Individual members of the party are expected to reconcile their personal agendas with the collective agenda of the party.
In an effort to promote transparency, the NDC decided that all contributions to campaign efforts should be reported. It was agreed by the NEC that all contributors including individual sources of contributions would have to be reported by the candidate to the party.
Campaign funds should only run through party campaign accounts. Party officials were to be held accountable for using the party funds for legitimate party matters only.
To institutionalize these principles, the NDC has instructed its National Legal Adviser to chair a committee that will develop a Code of Conduct for all party officials and candidates.
In addition, recognizing the emergence of factionalism from its recent activities, the NDC has established a National Reconciliation Committee.
The responsibility of this committee is to reconcile the aggrieved members of the party in order to guarantee unity within the party in preparation fthe or upcoming elections.
It was emphasized that all members remain loyal to the party and the nation for future generations to come.
