The Nigerian government has intensified its campaign for wider use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), with President Bola Tinubu launching a number of gas facilities designed to increase clean and cheap transportation in Nigeria.
During the launch event held in Abuja, the president launched a high-capacity CNG booster station in Jahi, as well as other stations that were commissioned earlier in Lagos and Owerri.
This projects are part of an initiative by the Federal Government to intensify the use of gas to reduce the dependency on petrol and diesel while alleviating the effect of higher fuel prices on Nigerians.
Although this move is considered a giant leap in the right direction, adoption rates have been quite low, with just about 100,000 cars converted to use CNG compared to the government’s goal of one million.
Nevertheless, officials still hold onto their optimism. According to them, the construction of the aforementioned infrastructure highlights the increase in the involvement of the private sector and investors’ confidence in the Nigerian gas sector, thanks to policies and financing provided by the government.
The Jahi booster station is anticipated to play a significant role in increasing the availability of CNG in the Federal Capital Territory. Due to its ability to cater to hundreds of motor cars per day, it can go a long way in easing the supply of gas, making more people adopt its use.
According to the officials, investment in infrastructure would help speed up the process of adoption.
