A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja will today, 26 May, 2026, deliver judgment in a suit seeking to disqualify former President, Goodluck Jonathan, from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Justice Peter Lifu is expected to rule on whether Jonathan, who had taken the oath of office twice before leaving power in 2015, can still contest and be sworn in as President again.
The judgment comes days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, offered Jonathan a waiver as the party’s sole presidential candidate.
The suit was filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The plaintiff also asked the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
Justice Lifu fixed today May 2026 for judgment, after hearing arguments from counsel for the plaintiff and the defendant.
The plaintiff asked the court to determine whether Jonathan remains eligible to seek the office of President again, having regard to Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
