Rivers community accuses Shell of neglect after oil spill

The people of Ndele community in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State have cried out against the alleged neglect and indifference by an oil major, Shell Petroleum Development Company.

The indigenes lamented that over two months since oil spill from the oil multinational’s pipeline polluted their creeks, the company had yet to come to their aid.

The community said said that since spill from Shell’s pipeline contaminated their water and their farms, the company has not done the necessary remediation nor send medical aids to the community.

A community source who spoke to theportcitynews on the phone said that locals have resorted to self-help while many others have moved away from the community into neigbouring communities due to the degree of the population.

He said the senator representing Rivers East senatorial district in the national assembly, Andrew Uchendu, visited the area a month ago and promised to ensure that Shell acts responsibly and clean up the area but since his visit, there has be no words from Shell or any other government official.

According to him, the community has decided to go on a peaceful protest to bring to the world’s attention, the level of damage the oil spill has done on the environment.

Recall that theportcitynews reported of the visit of senator Uchendu to the affected area in July where he had promised a speedy remediation of the affected area.
