The Niger Delta Development Commission has strengthened its emergency response capacity with the deployment of a new fire truck to its Department of Health, Safety, and Environment at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku, represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Kelechi Nwelue, said the initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and surrounding communities from fire-related emergencies.
According to him, the fire truck was procured to improve the Commission’s ability to respond swiftly to fire outbreaks within its facilities and neighbouring areas, similar to emergency support services often provided by major corporate organisations.

He stressed that safety remains a shared responsibility and noted that the deployment of modern firefighting equipment is essential for effective emergency management and accident prevention.
Ogbuku also revealed that the Commission plans to extend similar safety support and emergency response facilities to its state offices across the Niger Delta region to improve hazard control and disaster response capabilities.
In her remarks, the Director of Health, Safety and Environment, Chinyere Umeh, praised the Commission’s leadership for prioritising staff welfare and operational safety.
She said the addition of the fire truck would greatly improve the department’s preparedness for emergencies while reinforcing safety standards and environmental responsibility within the Commission.
