Health, Environment and You (HEY) has formed a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to promote sustainable waste management, enhance the circular economy, and protect public health throughout Rivers State.
This collaboration highlight the vital role of workers in fostering environmentally responsible communities. By integrating labour advocacy with environmental initiatives, HEY and the NLC aim to implement effective solutions that reduce pollution, improve sanitation, and create safer, healthier living and working environments.
Ahead of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the NLC in Rivers State, reaffirmed the union’s dedication to promoting a cleaner, greener, and healthier Rivers State. He highlighted that environmental sustainability is not merely an option but crucial for workers’ welfare, productivity, and long-term economic security.

According to Agwanwor, Workers’ Day will provide a platform to raise awareness about responsible waste management practices, environmental protection, and public health safety. It will also emphasize the significance of transitioning to a circular economy minimizing waste while reusing resources and maintaining economic value.
He urged Nigerian workers to actively engage in protecting the environment. He pointed out that a degraded environment poses direct threats to health, livelihoods, and national development.
The Union Leader called on workers across all sectors to embrace environmentally responsible practices both at work and home, stressing that collective action is essential for achieving a healthier and more sustainable future.
Through this collaboration, HEY and the NLC aim to empower workers as champions of environmental stewardship recognizing that a productive workforce relies on a safe environment and that environmental security is fundamental for public health and economic resilience.
