FG Begins Payment of Doctors’ Salary Arrears

Payment of long-overdue arrears linked to the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure has begun for members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.

The association’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Abdulmajid Ibrahim, confirmed this in a message to members, noting that the outstanding payments, covering between one and six months for some doctors, are already being processed.

Several doctors have also acknowledged receiving their payments. According to him, the leadership of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors is pleased that the disbursement of the 25% and 35% CONMESS review arrears has commenced.

He assured members who are yet to receive their payments that the process will be completed soon and urged them to remain patient.

However, he explained that the August portion of the arrears is experiencing minor administrative delays, which may push the payment back by about 1 to 2 weeks.

The CONMESS review, which determines salary adjustments for medical and dental officers in Nigeria’s public sector, has long been a source of disagreement between doctors and the government. Past delays in implementing the review and settling arrears have led to strikes by resident doctors, affecting healthcare services in both federal and state hospitals.

Resident doctors, who play a critical role in Nigeria’s tertiary health system, have consistently raised concerns about welfare challenges, including unpaid salaries, difficult working conditions, and the migration of medical professionals abroad in search of better opportunities.

The latest payments indicate progress in efforts to address these concerns and prevent further industrial disputes.

Ibrahim added that any member who still has issues after the payment process should report through their centre leadership for quick resolution, while appreciating members for their patience and continued trust in the association’s leadership.
