RVSG to impound smoke-emitting vehicles

The Rivers State Government has said it will soon arrest drivers of cars emitting smoke in a bid to check air pollution in the State.

The state government also said such arrested drivers will be forced to pay fines as the emission of CO2 destroys the environment.

This is according to an 8-point communiqué issued at the end of a meeting between the Special Adviser to Rivers State Governor on Pollution Control, Nwuke Anucha and the Port Harcourt Air Quality Working Group, and made available to newsmen.

The communiqué stated that the device that reads as well as monitors vehicles’ emission was already with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for test running.

According to the communiqué, the Rivers State Government had collaborated with the Butchers Association of Nigeria in the state to make available environment-friendly machines for roasting of animals to reduce pollution in the abattoirs across the state.

The communiqué also encouraged residents to log on to www.rivspollutioncontrol.com to get reliable information on air quality in the state.
