Rivers Govt Receives UN Award, Reaffirms Commitment to SDGs

Governor Siminalayi Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritziing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), describing them as Rivers State’s primary blueprint for development.

Speaking through his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, at the Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday, Fubara said the SDGs guided the state’s development agenda.

He highlighted the strategic alignment of the Ministries of Health, Education, Agriculture and Women Affairs to drive the achievement of the global targets.

The governor stated that the administration’s clear objective was to ensure that the impact of governance was felt most by the state’s vulnerable groups.

While representing the governor at the event, Prof. Odu was decorated with the United Nations Global Icon of Peace and Integrity Award, becoming the first Nigerian and the second African woman to receive the prestigious honour.

Accepting the award from the International Face of Peace and Integrity Advocates, Odu described the recognition as a catalyst for renewed action.

She said the honour was more than an accolade, noting that it served as a powerful reminder of her heightened responsibility to deepen her service to humanity.

Odu added that the recognition challenged her to take decisive action and amplify the initiatives that had earned her the award.

She further noted that hosting the ceremony in Port Harcourt sent a strong signal that Rivers State remained peaceful, stable and open for investment.

She emphasised that dialogue and negotiation continued to guide the administration’s pursuit of peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, Dr Chinaza Jennifer Ugboaja, Global Director of the organisation, praised Prof. Odu as a trailblazer, saying her commitment to integrity continued to inspire the next generation of Nigerian leaders.
