CAF President Breaks Silence on Burna Boy’s Airport Drama Ahead of AFCON Concert

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has addressed the incident involving Burna Boy at a Moroccan airport while the Afrobeats star was on his way to Rabat to headline the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert.

The episode, which was shared on social media, created intense debate among fans and Burna Boy lovers across Africa and beyond. Many questioned the conduct of Moroccan customs officials after reports emerged that the Grammy Award-winning artist had been delayed shortly after his arrival.

Reacting to the growing attention, Motsepe used a press conference to shed light on what actually transpired. He explained that Burna Boy’s brief hold-up was linked to a jewellery-related matter after customs officers noticed the singer’s expensive and eye-catching gold accessories. According to him, the situation was purely procedural and not targeted, stressing that there was no hostility or mistreatment involved.

Motsepe further revealed that once he was informed of the development, he immediately stepped in to ensure the issue was handled smoothly.

His intervention, he said, helped calm tensions and led to a swift and friendly resolution, allowing Burna Boy to proceed with his schedule without further delay.

The CAF president also praised the cooperative attitude of all parties involved, noting that the matter did not in any way affect the success of the AFCON Fan Zone event.

“Recently was called that I need intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officers noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewelry. I intervened and it was resolved,” he stated.
