Police Confirm Suicide of Young Man in Bayelsa, Investigations Ongoing

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the death of a young man who died by suicide in Elebele community, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state,

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the matter had been reported to the police and preliminary investigations had commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deceased, identified simply as Israel, was said to have taken his own life on Tuesday, a development that has thrown the otherwise quiet riverine community into mourning.

According to residents, Israel was widely regarded as a reserved and diligent young man with no known history of violence or disruptive behaviour.

Community sources disclosed that the deceased had been emotionally unsettled in recent weeks, reportedly due to unresolved personal issues involving a romantic partner. Neighbours noted that he became increasingly withdrawn and less interactive, raising concerns that, in hindsight, pointed to emotional distress.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the tragic incident came as a complete surprise to residents, adding that although some people noticed changes in Israel’s mood, no one anticipated such an outcome.

Following the incident, family members were left devastated as youths and elders of the community converged on the family home. Traditional rites were also initiated in line with local customs as the community grappled with the loss.

However, the spokesperson noted that the command would ensure all necessary procedures were followed while urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators.
