Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their AFCON 2025 Group C campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on Tuesday at the Complexe Sportif de Fes.
Nigeria started the match brightly and controlled most of the early play, even though Tanzania created a few chances. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi headed in a cross from Alex Iwobi to give Nigeria a 1–0 lead at halftime.
Tanzania hit back quickly after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Charles M’Mombwa took advantage of a loose ball to equalise and make it 1–1. Nigeria responded well and went back in front in the 55th minute when Ademola Lookman scored with a calm left-footed shot from outside the box.

Tanzania pushed hard for another goal late in the game, but Nigeria defended strongly. Goalkeeper Daniel Nwabali and defenders Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi made important stops to protect the lead. Nigeria held on to secure all three points.
The win puts the Super Eagles top of Group C for now, with Tunisia and Uganda playing later on Tuesday night. The result gives Nigeria confidence ahead of their next matches against Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, and Uganda on Tuesday, December 30.
