Why Rivers Governor Defected From PDP To APC

The political landscape of Rivers State has been thrown into fresh debate following reports of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move, coming amid months of political tension and power struggles within the state, has created conversations far beyond party lines, raising questions about governance, loyalty, and the future direction of Rivers State.

Governor Fubara, who emerged as Rivers State governor on the platform of the PDP, reportedly announced his switch to the APC after consultations with key political stakeholders. The defection is seen as one of the most significant political shifts in the state in recent times, given Rivers’ long-standing reputation as a PDP stronghold and its strategic importance in the South-South region.

His decision followed a series of high-level engagements at the federal level, fuelling speculation that alignment with the ruling party at the centre may have influenced the move

Governor Fubara’s defection can be strongly linked to the prolonged political crisis that has gripped Rivers State. The governor’s relationship with members of the State House of Assembly and influential political actors deteriorated over time, creating a governance atmosphere marked by legal battles, factional disputes, and institutional gridlock.

Sources close to the development suggest that the governor felt politically isolated and inadequately supported by his former party during the crisis. The APC, on the other hand, presented itself as a platform that could offer political stability, federal backing, and a smoother working relationship with the central government.

For Fubara, the move appears to be less about ideology and more about survival, control, and the ability to govern without persistent internal resistance.

The move could bring temporary political calm. Alignment with the ruling party at the federal level may ease tensions, unlock cooperation, and improve access to federal support and projects for the state.

While supporters view the defection as a strategic decision aimed at restoring stability and ensuring effective governance, critics argue it raises concerns about political consistency and party loyalty. For Rivers residents, however, the ultimate test will not be party colours but whether the move translates into peace, development, and responsive leadership.
