NEC Approves N100bn to Upgrade Security Training Facilities

The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed a N100 billion package to refurbish training centres used by the Nigeria Police and other security agencies, in a bid to boost national security readiness.

The approval was given during NEC’s 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, following recommendations from an ad hoc committee set up to evaluate the condition of the facilities across the country.

NEC also cleared an additional N2.6 billion for consultancy services tied to the rehabilitation project.

The initiative stems from President Bola Tinubu’s proposal at the Council’s 152nd meeting in October, in which he called for a comprehensive overhaul of security training institutions nationwide.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who chairs the ad hoc committee, briefed the Council on the findings, noting that many of the training centres are in alarming states of disrepair.

He stressed the need for urgent intervention to ensure security personnel receive effective training.

Presiding over the meeting, Vice President Kashim Shettima urged state governors to ensure that ongoing economic reforms are reflected in the daily realities of citizens.

He emphasised that governance must now be measured by concrete improvements in communities, not by policy statements alone.

According to him, leaders must prioritise practical solutions and drive reforms that yield visible results in markets, schools, healthcare centres, and farmlands.

The Council also reviewed progress by its Ad-Hoc Committee on Polio, which has convened four times between June and November 2025.

NEC noted that the meetings have strengthened coordination and reinforced state-level commitment to eliminating the remaining strain of variant poliovirus in the country.
