To avoid a measles outbreak in the state, the National Orientation Agency and National Primary Health Care Development Agency, in collaboration with the Centre for Wellbeing and Integrated Nutrition Solutions, have begun the introduction of the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine in the Sagbama Local Government Area (LGA) of Bayelsa State.

The introduction was carried out in a town hall meeting held on Thursday, 27 November 2025.

Following the meeting, the Executive Chairman of Sagbama Local Government Council, Mrs Alice Allen, appreciated Governor Douye Diri for his effort in making healthcare affordable and accessible in the state.

While speaking on the state’s ASSURED Prosperity initiative by replicating impactful health programmes within Sagbama, Chief Press Secretary Comrade ThankGod, representing Mrs Allen, highlighted the government commitment.

Mrs Allen, while urging the parents, carers and community leaders to ensure their wards and children partake in receiving vaccines, said it is mandatory to prioritise the wellbeing of children to prevent outbreaks of diseases.

The chairman highlighted the achievement of past polio campaigns conducted by the health agency and others which aim at preventing disease and improving food nutrition.

The campaign organisers, Mr Musa Bolouzigha, alongside the Head of Department, Chief Oyinbunugha Dabrilagha, explained the benefit of the MR vaccine, noting that polio is a highly contagious disease.

Community leaders who were present at the town hall meeting expressed gratitude to the organisers, including the government.

However, the forthcoming measles campaign is scheduled to be held in February 2026 in Sagama LGA.
