A strong intention have been declared by former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel in taking up a leadership role within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but made it clear that he would only accept such responsibility in an environment free of corruption.
Commenting and lamenting in the aftermath of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, Mikel Obi said the issues plaguing Nigerian football go far beyond results on the pitch. In his words, he said; “I Won’t Have Corruption Tied to Me, I Mikel Demands Transparency”
known for his outspoken commitment to Nigerian football, Mikel emphasised that he has always given everything for the country and would gladly contribute again, but only under a transparent and accountable system.
”Since my early days, one thing I have always done is fight for the country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, through the U17, U20, the senior national team.” “Years of sacrifice. I have never for once said no to my country.”

”I can give my opinion when I know, and help, I will always be ready. But again, I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to do that if I am going to say yes,” Obi added.
“You must make sure things are done properly if you want us going forward.”
“Get the people that have the same thought and direction, so when the players come back home to play, there is a good environment for them to play and perform.”
Administrative Experience Already in Place
The former Chelsea Midfielder has maintained a presence in sports leadership, despite retirement from international football. In July 2023, he was appointed Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
Mikel Obi has provided strategic insight on sports development via this role while helping drive new athletic initiatives across the state.
Putting these experiences together, coupled with his stature in world football, has led many to view him as a potential reformer capable of reshaping football administration in Nigeria.
