In a significant move to alleviate economic hardship on residents, the Executive Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Amasenibo Hon, Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple, has directed the immediate and indefinite suspension of all statutory taxes and revenue collections targeting lock-up shops, open markets, pharmacies, petrol stations, and petty traders throughout the council.
The directive was contained in an official statement issued on Thursday, 13 November 2025, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Council Chairman, Ambassador Wisdom Chapp-Jumbo.
The order equally prohibits the Lock-Up Shops and Market Management Committees from carrying out any further revenue drives or enforcement activities until fresh instructions are issued by the council leadership.
Speaking on the rationale behind the decision, Hon. Pepple described the suspension as a deliberate and compassionate intervention aimed at easing the financial burden on small and medium-scale entrepreneurs, who he noted form the backbone of Bonny’s local economy.
“These businesses are the lifeblood of our communities. At this critical period, especially as we approach the festive season, it is the responsibility of the government to stand firmly with the people rather than compound their challenges,” the Chairman stated.
The comprehensive suspension covers all forms of council levies, including shop rates, daily market tolls, sanitation fees, operational permits, loading and off-loading charges, and other related dues.

The measure takes immediate effect across all wards and communities in Bonny Local Government Area.
Residents and traders have already begun expressing appreciation for the timely relief, with many describing it as a welcome Christmas gift ahead of the yuletide season.
The Council Chairman further assured the people that this tax holiday is part of a broader economic stimulus package designed to boost commerce, protect livelihoods, and cushion the harsh effects of rising living costs on ordinary citizens of the area.
With this bold step, the Bonny LGA administration has demonstrated its commitment to people-oriented governance and responsive leadership in the face of prevailing economic realities.
