Collapsed Roof Allegedly Injures Student at Etche School

Rivers

A student of Okoroagu Community Secondary School in Etche Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State, has narrowly escaped death allegedly after part of the school’s roof collapsed during lessons, leaving him with a severe head injury.

According to the report shared on Saturday by Certified Courtist, a Facebook user, alleged that a small number of students also sustained minor injuries from the collapsed roof, which has reignited concerns about the deplorable condition of public schools in the area.

According to the post shared, the wooden plank that fell from the roof struck the student without warning while classes were in session.

The student whose name was withheld was reportedly rushed for medical treatment. Other images shared depicted some students learning in the dilapidated alleged school building described by locals as a “disaster.”

The post shared has generated outage reactions from nitizens calling for government action and intervention.

A large number of Facebook users reportedly say the collapse reflects the broader decay of public infrastructure in Etche LGA, where many schools and health centres have long fallen into disrepair, describing classrooms with leaking roofs and crumbling walls.

Nitizens critics have also accused local leaders of misplaced priorities, alleging that despite receiving funds for constituency projects, some lawmakers have reportedly chosen to build town halls instead of fixing critical education and health facilities.

However, the current local government chairman, Obinna Anyanwu has faced backlash for launching a restaurant project inside the council headquarters while neglecting basic services.

“This is both deplorable and despicable. How can a government allow its citizens to learn under such conditions and circumstances?”, Precioustone Chrissy Facebook user lamented

“How can these children concentrate on their studies with this kind environmentnt.” Augustine Amaka, another user responded

Marc-Mini Endwell Buike revealed that, “The immediate past Chairman was there sharing a used Keke bus in the name of empowerment.”

For Broda Kenneth Orji wrote, “From the look of things reptiles are hovering around that class room.”
