The Rivers State Government has rolled out a three-day emergency flood mitigation campaign, targeting high-risk areas in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas.
Led by Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, who also chairs the 2025 Flood Management Committee, the initiative kicked off on Friday, October 17, with desilting operations starting at the Eliozu-Egbolo axis. The goal is to clear blocked drainage systems and restore water flow, reducing the immediate threat of flooding.
“This intervention is an immediate measure to temporarily mitigate the effects of flooding in our communities,” Prof. Odu stated in a release from Government House.
The cleanup is being carried out in collaboration with several civil society organizations and community-based groups, whose voluntary support has been key to the rapid deployment of the operation.

This marks the first major activity of the Flood Management Committee since it was restructured by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who appointed Prof. Odu to head the team following the state’s transition from emergency rule.
Officials say the intervention will continue over the next two days, focusing on key flood-prone zones across the state.
The swift launch of the desilting campaign has been praised as a proactive move to prevent a repeat of past flood disasters that have disrupted lives and property in the state.
