Nigeria’s U20 Take on Australia in Friendly Match Amid WC Preparation

Nigeria’s U20 team, the Flying Eagles, is set to face their Australian counterparts in a friendly match on Tuesday. This game is part of the preparations for both teams ahead of the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals, which will commence in Chile on Saturday.

‎The match is scheduled to take place at the Complejo Deportivo Ruca Mapu in Santiago, kicking off at 5 PM local time (9 PM in Nigeria).

‎On Saturday, Chile’s U20 team held the Flying Eagles to a 1-1 draw in a friendly match in Rancagua, with Ahmed Akinyele netting for Nigeria in the 18th minute, followed by a 36th-minute equalizer from Felipe Faúndez.

‎The upcoming friendly against Australia is anticipated to offer crucial match experience and tactical insights for the Flying Eagles as they strive to make a significant impact at the World Cup.

‎It is also important to note that the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup will mark the 24th edition of this biennial international men’s youth football championship, which features under-20 national teams from FIFA member associations.

This tournament has been held since 1977, originally known as the FIFA World Youth Championship, and will take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.

‎A total of 24 teams have been organized into four pots of six teams, based on a performance ranking system, to be drawn into six groups of four teams.

The host nation, Chile, has been automatically seeded into Pot 1 and assigned to the first position in Group A, while the other teams have been seeded into pots according to their performances in the last five FIFA U-20 World Cups, with more recent tournaments given greater weight, and an additional five bonus points awarded to each of the six continental champions from the qualifying tournaments.

‎In the tournament draw, Australia has been placed in Group D alongside Italy, Cuba, and Argentina, while Nigeria will compete in Group F with Norway, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia.
