Super Eagles Target Goalkeeper Sets Bundesliga Record

Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu made his mark in Bundesliga history on Matchday 4 by saving his fifth consecutive penalty in the league, aiding his team in achieving a decisive 3-0 win against Werder Bremen.

‎Atubolu, aged 23, thwarted Romano Schmid’s penalty attempt in the 59th minute, preserving Freiburg’s two-goal advantage and ensuring a clean sheet.

‎This accomplishment sets a new Bundesliga record for the most consecutive penalties saved, highlighting the young goalkeeper’s rising stature in German football.

‎Atubolu’s impressive streak of penalty saves includes several notable opponents, such as André Silva of Bremen in February, Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen in December 2024, and Kevin Volland and Josip Juranović of Union Berlin in May 2024.

‎His poise under pressure complements an outstanding 2024-25 season, during which he established a club record by remaining 576 minutes without conceding a goal.

‎The goalkeeper has represented Germany at various youth levels, including U17, U19, U20, and U21, and became provisionally cap-tied to Germany in May 2019 when he played against Austria at the U17 European Championship.

‎Born to a German mother and a Nigerian father, Atubolu is eligible to represent Nigeria and has been associated with the Super Eagles.

‎His potential has attracted attention from the Nigeria Football Federation, although former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro had earlier indicated that convincing him to change allegiances might be challenging, considering his prospects with Germany.
