Research Drives Health Innovation, Pate Tells Confab

Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Mohammad Pate, emphasized the crucial role of research in driving innovative reforms in the country’s health sector on Thursday, 18th September 2025. Speaking at a conference organized by the Nigeria Implementation Science Alliance (NISA) in Abuja.

Prof. Pate highlighted that research is essential for addressing healthcare challenges and generating new ideas that can lead to innovation and transformation.

He noted that this initiative aligns with the federal government’s health sector renewal agenda, which aims to improve healthcare outcomes.

He said, “It is always necessary for us to interrogate what we are doing, using scientific method, and to learn what is working and what is not working.

Research is key to generating new ideas in knowledge and for driving innovation and transformation. Clearly, this initiative aligns with what the federal government is pushing for in its health sector renewal agenda”.

The Board Chairman of NISA, Echezona Ezeanolue, stressed the need for a strong partnership between government and private institutions to drive progress in the health sector.

He also emphasized the importance of effective collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Education and Health to ensure proper training of health professionals.

According to Ezeanolue, research provides valuable insights that can inform policy-making and improve healthcare delivery.

The conference brought together government leaders, researchers, policy implementers, funders, students, and community voices to share knowledge and experiences.

The event aimed to ensure that local actions drive sustainable growth and that evidence-based research translates into meaningful and lasting change in the health sector. By working together, stakeholders can harness the power of research to drive innovation and improve healthcare outcomes in Nigeria.
