Nigeria Backs China’s Global Governance Initiative

The Federal Government, FG, has endorsed China’s new Global Governance Initiative (GGI), hailing it as a timely and thoughtful contribution to strengthening the international system.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Thursday said the endorsement was announced following the initiative’s launch at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus meeting in Tianjin, China.

According to Ebienfa, Nigeria views the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared global priorities. Ebienfa said the initiative, which builds on previous Chinese proposals including the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and Global Security Initiative (GSI).

This, Ebienfa said, aims to address critical challenges such as the need for greater representation in global forums, enhanced respect for international law, and more effective responses to climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.

According to Ebienfa, Nigeria particularly welcomed the GGI’s emphasis on five foundational principles: sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action.

As a key player in Africa and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria sees potential for the initiative to support the reform of the United Nations, promote inclusive governance in new domains like artificial intelligence and cyberspace, and foster equitable development.

Ebienfa noted that the GGI aligns with Nigeria’s national development objectives, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

The country reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with partners across the Global South to build consensus and strengthen regional cooperation.

Ebienfa added the endorsement underscored Nigeria’s enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds shared responsibility and mutual respect.
