Terry G Vows Never to Retire, Embraces “Upcoming Artist” Label

Veteran Afrobeats and Street-hop pioneer Terry G has made it clear: he’s not going anywhere. The 39-year-old artist, born Gabriel Oche Amanyi, has declared that he would rather be seen as an up-and-coming artist than ever consider retiring from music.

Responding to critics who accused him of chasing clout on social media, Terry G took to his X handle with a bold statement:

“I fully embrace being seen as an upcoming artist. You only become a legend when you retire, and I’m never retiring. So if you catch me chasing clout, let me be.”

Known for his eccentric style and energetic sound, Terry G led the Street-hop movement in the 2010s, delivering hits like Free Madness, Sangalo, Akpako Master, and Run Mad. His music became the soundtrack of Nigeria’s urban youth culture, blending raw street energy with infectious rhythms.

Now, he’s staging a comeback with one of 2025’s most unexpected collaborations, Tanko’ with rising Afrobeats star Victony. Released on August 8, 2025, the track is a high-energy anthem that fuses Victony’s sleek vocals with Terry G’s signature chaotic flair.

According to Pulse Nigeria, the song draws on themes of resilience and defiance, with Victony comparing his journey to the toughness of a football nicknamed “Tanko.” Terry G’s verse brings a nostalgic rush of his early 2000s energy, reintroducing him to a new generation of listeners.

The music video, set on a vibrant beach backdrop, features Terry G’s iconic bell and wild dance moves, reminding fans why he was once dubbed the “craziest” man in Nigerian music.

With ‘Tanko’ gaining traction and Terry G’s refusal to bow out, it’s clear he’s not chasing clout, he’s chasing legacy.
