Fresh Oil Spill Hits Renaissance Pipeline in Rivers

Rivers State

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has confirmed a fresh crude oil spill from a pipeline operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd in Ikata community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to YEAC-Nigeria, the spill, which occurred on Friday, August 22, was first reported by members of its One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta and the Crude Oil Spill Alert System (COSAS) in the area.

In a statement signed in Port Harcourt by its Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the organisation disclosed that the incident was recorded along the 14-inch Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline right of way.

He said the spill is suspected to have been caused by sabotage, pending confirmation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

YEAC-Nigeria recalled that the same pipeline in Ikata community experienced another spill on May 5, 2025, marking the second incident within three months.

The group also noted that the development comes less than three weeks after an oil spill in Kpean community, Khana Local Government Area, which NOSDRA later confirmed was caused by equipment failure.

YEAC-Nigeria has therefore urged NOSDRA to immediately conduct a joint investigation visit (JIV) to the Ikata spill site to establish the cause and enforce provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 against those responsible.
