NUJ Concludes Zonal Meeting in Port Harcourt

The Zone F (South-South) Executive Council (ZEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) concluded its meeting today at the NUJ Complex in Moscow, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The meeting, which commenced on Wednesday, August 20th, and ran through Friday, August 22nd, was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo.

The ZEC deliberated on key issues affecting the South-South region, the media landscape, and the welfare of journalists. Following extensive discussions, the council issued a communiqué with the following resolutions:

The ZEC lauded the Rivers State Government for maintaining peace and fostering a conducive environment for citizens. It also acknowledged the cordial relationship between the state government and the NUJ Rivers State Council.

The ZEC directed council chairmen and secretaries to uphold professionalism by revalidating the membership status of journalists to combat quackery.
Following a tour of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in Ogoniland, the ZEC commended HYPREP’s remediation efforts and urged the Federal Government to extend interventions to the entire Niger Delta region.

The ZEC called on the Federal Government to address the poor state of infrastructure, particularly trunk A roads, and to implement security measures to protect lives and livelihoods in the South-South region.

The ZEC congratulated Comrade Ambimbola Oyetunde on her appointment as Lagos State Bureau Chief of FRCN and appreciated the National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for appointing its members to the CWC of the Union. The ZEC condemned the unauthorized use of the NUJ’s name for awards and warned of sanctions.

The ZEC commended the Rivers State Council for hosting the meeting and acknowledged the support of state governors in the South-South region. The ZEC urged council leaders to ensure that members maintain top-notch professionalism.

The communiqué was signed by the Communiqué Drafting Committee (CDC) members: Comrade Nsibiet John (Chairman), Comrade Ijeoma Tubosia, PhD (Secretary), and Comrade Josephine Omodior. Other signatories include Comrade John Angese (Zonal Secretary) and Comrade Opaka Dokubo (Zonal Vice President).
