The female basketball team of Nigeria, ‘D’Tigress, received the same honour and monetary reward as the Super Falcons of Nigeria after winning a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women Championship.
The competition, which was held in Côte d’Ivoire, saw the Nigerian female basketball team beat every team they faced from the group stage to the finals to be crowned champions of African women’s basketball. ‘D’Tigress is not just the best-ranked African female basketball team; they are also the team with the best record in terms of games won and trophies in the locker.
After extending their record in consecutive Women’s AfroBasket tournaments, beating Mali 78-64 on Sunday, August 3rd, in the final, they returned to the capital of Nigeria, Abuja, to a hero’s welcome, where fans celebrated with them as they made their way out of the airport.
Later that day, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, conferred on them (players and technical staff) the honour of Order of the Niger (OON), a cash gift of $100,000 to each player, $50,000 to each member of the technical committee, and a plot of land to each player as well as to each member of the technical committee.

The only difference in what the presidency gifted both teams is the plot of land and the three-bedroom apartment. While the Super Falcons received a three-bedroom apartment, ‘D’Tigress received plots of land.
As expected, many Nigerians are waiting to see if members of the Governors’ Forum, MTN, and other individuals or companies who gifted the Super Falcons in any way would replicate the same for ‘D’Tigress after their triumph, now that the President has honoured D’Tigress well.
