The German people chose her as their leader, and she skillfully guided 80 million citizens for 18 years with expertise, diligence, commitment, and authenticity. She refrained from making absurd statements. She avoided appearing in Berlin’s alleyways for photo ops. She earned the title “The Lady of the World,” likened to the strength of six million men.
Throughout her eighteen years in charge, no wrongdoing was attributed to her. She did not hire family members for government roles. She never claimed to be the architect of her successes. She did not earn exorbitant salaries, nor did anyone applaud her efforts; she did not pursue accolades or awards, nor did she confront her predecessors.
Just yesterday, Merkel stepped down from her party leadership and passed the torch to her successors, leaving Germany and its people in an outstanding state.
The Germans’ response was unparalleled in the nation’s history. The whole population spontaneously emerged onto their balconies and applauded for six uninterrupted minutes. A nationwide standing ovation.
Germany unified in bidding farewell to their leader, a chemical physicist who remained untempted by fame or material wealth and did not indulge in acquiring real estate, luxury cars, yachts, or private jets, knowing her roots were in former East Germany.

During a press conference, a female journalist remarked: We observe that you’re wearing the same suit, do you not own another? She responded: “I am a public servant, not a fashion model.”
At another press engagement, she was asked: Do you employ housekeepers for cleaning and cooking? Her reply was: “No, I do not have staff, nor do I require them. My husband and I handle those tasks at home together.”
Then, another reporter inquired, Who does the laundry, you or your husband? Her response was: “I sort the clothes, and my husband takes care of the washing machine, usually at night to save on electricity and to minimise disturbances to the neighbours; luckily, the dividing wall of our apartment is quite thick. Merkel resides in a typical apartment like any other citizen. She had been living in this apartment long before becoming Chancellor of Germany. She chose to stay there and does not possess a mansion, staff, swimming pools, or gardens.
