FIFA Officially Strips Titles Off Barca, Real Madrid and Others

Reports confirm that FIFA has decided to take away world champion titles from eight football clubs because of a big change in how the tournament works. This new setup has moved the old Club World Cup to a lower level, called “intercontinental champions,” which means the titles these clubs previously held are no longer recognized as World titles.

Among the clubs affected are three top teams from the English Premier League: Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

These clubs, once seen as world champions, have lost that honor because of the updated competition structure. The effect goes beyond England, with a total of eight clubs impacted, including five from Europe and three from South America.

Notably, two of Spain’s biggest teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are among those losing their world champion status.

Real Madrid, who had five titles under the previous format, now have to compete again to win back their global title. For now, they are the reigning Intercontinental Cup champions, a tournament that came before the modern Club World Cup. Barcelona, with three Club World Cup wins, including their last one in 2015 against River Plate (3-0), also loses its former standing.

Other notable clubs affected include Bayern Munich and Corinthians, both of whom won the title twice.

Bayern’s last win was in 2020, when they beat Tigres UANL 1-0. Corinthians won a surprise victory against Chelsea in 2012. Brazilian clubs São Paulo (champions in 2005) and Internacional (champions in 2006), along with Italian teams AC Milan and Inter Milan, have also had their titles removed under the new rules.

This major change shows how FIFA is now recognizing global club dominance differently, and former champions must now compete again in the new Club World Cup to regain their status as the best team in the world.

The decision has caused a lot of discussion about the legacy of these clubs and the value of their past successes in light of the tournament’s new format. Drop your opinions un the comment section.
